The main town of the Argentinian Lake District is Bariloche and we had planned to explore the lakes from there. But coming from Pucon the bus stops at San Martin de los Andes and we decided to stop there for 3 nights. SMDLA is a smallish town by a very large lake. There are plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants and arriving when we did in late October was a good move because we beat the crowds and got a great deal on the accommodation. The summer season doesn’t really start until November and because of Christmas, the real summer season is January to April. While we were here it was sunny every day and not too hot (max of around 21c) so who needs ‘summer’? We spent one day walking in the woods beside the lake. This turned out to be one of the best days out on the tour. Beautiful views, amazing woodland and a few animals along the way.
