People have told us that as a base to start our exploration of the Llanquihue area, Puerto Varas would be the best bet. Puerto Montt is bigger and also nearby but is more of a working town and far less attractive. Puerto Varas is very relaxed and has some decent shops and restaurants. Also it is close proximity to several very large volcanoes. This looked like a great place to hire a car. Of the 7 car hire places that Google Maps knew about we only found 1 that existed in the real world. Despite the lack of competition we managed to get a biggish saloon (with absolutely no mod cons) for £32 per day so we were ready for 4 days touring. Mauricio, was the most laid back car hire guy I have ever met. Sign here, give money and goodbye. He seemed surprised when we actually brought the car back 4 days later.
