Villa General Belgrano

General Belgrano was a hero of Argentinian independence and the designer of the Argentinian flag. Villa General Belgrano is about 90 minutes in a car south of Cordoba. It was founded in 1930 by German speculators and the Alpine quality of the village attracted people from Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria. Something of their background must have rubbed off because now the place resembles a Spanish speaking Bavarian village, complete with German beer (there are multiple microbreweries in town), German food and German chocolate. And of course you can still get a variety of empanadas to go with your beer if you get sick of sausages. Every year they have a massive Oktoberfest. We missed it by a week. The normal population of the village is 10,000 but Oktoberfest attracts about 90,000 people! It is the 3rd most important Oktoberfest in the world behind Munich and Blumenau (Brazil). As much as we would have liked to have seen it, I doubt we would have been as lucky on the accommodation if we had gone a week later.
